All the hopes, mishaps and embarrassments of a classic blind date will have you squirming in your seat and laughing out loud as the Rose Drama Club presents “First Date” January 31-February 3 in Hatfield Hall.

“First Date” is a romantic musical comedy that follows the ups and downs of a seemingly ill-advised blind date between Casey, a hardboiled veteran of the dating scene, and Aaron, a slightly geeky first-date newbie. As they work their way through dinner and drinks at a New York restaurant, each is haunted by the internal voices of friends, relatives and manipulative exes offering advice, rebuke and sometimes encouragement.

Called “a definite crowd-pleaser” by The Hollywood Reporter, “First Date” is a sometimes touching, light-hearted musical comedy that anyone can relate to. Dancing and songs such as “First Impressions,” “Bailout” and “The Things Never Said” keep the story fresh and fun throughout.

“Perhaps the most significant innovation in “First Date” is that it happens in real time,” says director Terence Hartnett. “We are invited along on this blind date, which happens before our eyes in ninety minutes.”

Junior Ryan Roetker and senior Marlissa Sebring star as Aaron and Casey. Other cast members include Tucker Osman as the waiter, Cam Hudspeth as Gabe, Emily Dougherty as Allison, Katarina Chan as Lauren and Trey Kline as Reggie. The assistant director is Jessica Corso.

The show contains adult themes and language.

Tickets for “First Date” are $20 for adults and $15 for those under 18, Rose-Hulman students, faculty and staff.
